Bo’Ness Hospital pilot signage project for patients’ rooms Stage 1

2014 - 2015

CALLS FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

For many of us, the physical space of a bedroom has special meaning. It should be a private, safe place of our own where we keep our most personal possessions. It should have privacy and a sense of security.

In residential facilities bedrooms have even more importance. They can be home to people for long or short periods, offering privacy in sometimes stressful group living situations. We want to work with patients and staff to create a more positive and less confusing therapeutic environment for people with dementia.

We are looking for an artist with experience of working creatively with people diagnosed with dementia to co-research the development and design of individual room signage to support orientation, privacy and personalisation and seek to make hospital environments less alienating for people with cognitive problems. To directly inform the research you will be working with patients in Bo’Ness Hospital NHS Forth Valley, over four sessions to explore creative directions that will be interactive and problem solving. You will be working collaboratively with Artlink Central Arts and Dementia mentor, Rosas Mitchell and in partnership with Bo’Ness Hospital Ward 2 Charge Nurse, Barry Sneddon.

The project research will lead to the design of a template for individual room signage for patients diagnosed with dementia to help them self- navigate to their rooms, with the potential for it to be rolled out across NHS Forth Valley dementia and Old Age Psychiatry units.

There will be a small amount of extra funding for this programme and we plan to focus on additional fundraising to support the progress of this work

The development artist should consider the following in their tender:

·         Devising inclusive research and development workshops to engage patients

·         Helping people personalise their bedroom

·         Supporting privacy, dignity and independence

·         Using personal items to identify bedroom doors and boosting their visibility

·         Supporting people who struggle to remember places and directions

·         Supporting people who can become frightened or distressed easily

·         Supporting people who have communication and/or reading problems

·         Utilise the experience, knowledge and skills of NHS Forth Valley staff
